ANNIVERSARY LEGENDS AND ODDITIES

Wedding Day Memories
If you were married in recent years, you probably had a video made of your wedding day. Cuddle up on the couch and watch it. You'll be amazed at the small details that you've forgotten.

If you were married before the days of wedding videos, take out your wedding album and look through the photos of the big day. You will love reliving the special memories.

Romantic Getaway
Go on a romantic getaway whether it's for a night, a weekend, or a full vacation. Bed and breakfasts are a perfect spot for a romantic weekend. Try to choose one that is near a lake or other secluded area where you can stroll hand in hand and enjoy each other's company. This makes the experience much more intimate.

Paint the Town
Invite your spouse out on a date. Make reservation for a romantic candlelight dinner and then go to a romantic movie or enjoy drinks in a secluded corner of your favorite bar. Take a moonlight stroll along a beach holding hands or go dancing in a romantic atmosphere. Whatever you choose, find magic in your moments together.

Second Honeymoon
Take a second honeymoon to a destination that you have both always wanted to visit. Whether your trip is to an exotic destination or a rustic cabin, it will allow you to enjoy intimacy in a special, private setting.

Stay Home

Lock the door, turn on the answering machine, build a fire in the fireplace, and light aroma therapy candles to create a romantic atmosphere. Cuddle up and share memories of your wedding day and discuss plans for the future. Relax, laugh, kiss and enjoy each other's company.

Go on a Picnic
Get up in the morning, pack a picnic hamper with your favorite foods and head to a secluded spot in the country. A spot where a waterfall cascades into a tranquil pool or a meadow where wildflowers bloom is a perfect setting for an anniversary picnic.

Anniversary
Note
What is right for your anniversary is totally up to you! Remember the most important thing is to enjoy each other's company. A special date or just quiet time together is the ticket to a memorable anniversary celebration.

Traditional and Modern Anniversary Gifts
It is traditional to give a gift on anniversaries to your partner or couples and it should be a gift that symbolizes the particular anniversary. Typically these are made of a different material for each wedding anniversary. There are currently two main lists of material in common use these being called the traditional and modern (or contemporary) lists. Pros and Cons of a Surprise Party
A couple you love dearly has a wedding anniversary coming up soon, and you want to do something really special to show you care. You might be considering throwing a surprise anniversary party. Surprise parties are usually fun and exciting, especially for the one who's planning the party. But is a surprise party a good idea for the couple you have in mind? You might want to read over the list of pros and cons below before making your decision. Surprise parties aren't for everyone or every occasion.

Pros of a Surprise Anniversary Party
There are several advantages to throwing a surprise anniversary party. For one, you'll be able to plan secretly and have a tremendous thrill when it's time to surprise the guests of honor. Just seeing their facial expressions makes it worth all the planning and "sneaky" techniques to get it accomplished.

Another advantage is that your guests of honor won't have the stress of planning the party. They can fully enjoy the party once they arrive and not have to worry beforehand or afterwards about how the party was put together.

Surprise parties often attract a larger crowd because people in general get excited about surprising someone. The party will more likely be a huge success!

Your loved ones will know you care because of the effort you put forth to plan a surprise party. Surprise parties give most people a sense of feeling "special" because of all the fuss over them.

Cons of a Surprise Anniversary Party
There are also several disadvantages of throwing a surprise party for your loved ones' anniversary. Probably the greatest disadvantage is the fact that you'll have to carefully plan a date and time that won't interfere with any of their other plans. For example, many couples take off on an anniversary vacation at that time and often spontaneously. With that in mind, you might want to plan the party a week or two before their anniversary to be safe. Or, in casual conversation, ask if they're planning anything special for their anniversary.

Another disadvantage is the fact that the couple is not able to give input as to how and where they would like their party. One way to overcome this is to plan everything according to what you know about them - their likes and dislikes. For example, if you know that the husband or wife hates barbecue, then don't serve barbecue at their anniversary party.

Surprise anniversary parties are often difficult to plan because you have to get the couple there without raising suspicions. You can plan ahead with them to go out to dinner at a nice restaurant or by inviting them over to your house for dinner to celebrate, and offer to pick them up. The problem is that any plan can backfire when you're trying to surprise someone, so have a plan "B".

Based on what you know about the anniversary couple's personality and the advice of their family and friends, you can decide if a surprise party is the best way to go. Either way, you can still host a fantastic anniversary party with careful planning.

A Man's Guide to Anniversary Planning

  • What to get her? A card, flowers and gift are all strongly recommended.
  • How important is planning? Planning is necessary. It means so much more when a woman knows you took the time to plan.
  • How intimate and personal should it be? Intimacy is the key. Make it personal and so will she!
  • What did you do last year? This will set the pace for this year. You always have to move forward to something new and different.
  • How much can you afford to spend? It is especially important to be realistic and have limits. She knows how much money the two of you have and if you spend what you can't afford, she'll know. And she'll also know that you two will be paying for it later. If that's the case, it's not worth it.
  • What type of woman is your wife (emotional, intellectual, traditional, practical, adventurous, etc.)? This is especially important when it comes to gift giving. The best gift says “I know you, I get you and I love you”. Most women love roses, but if lilies are her favorite… Be sure to bring lilies instead.
  • What does your wife like to do? What is her “thing”? This has nothing to do with what she does for a living! Photography, cooking, dancing, eating, etc. Again, tell her “I know you, I get you and I love you”. What ever it is, if you can, do it with her, or give her the opportunity to do “it”. Schedule a salsa class or better yet go to a cooking class together making it a photo shoot. Think outside the box. Individualizing your gift takes time, yes, but it's worth it.
  • What is the one thing you appreciate most about your wife? Tell her. This can be a theme for you. Try to express your appreciation without words, if you can.
  • What one thing can you do well, on your own? Do it for her, to her, or with her. Make yourself as much a part of a gift as possible.
  • How are you going to top it next year? Remember, it is about progression. Always continue the process of getting to know your wife anew!

THINGS NOT TO SAY ON YOUR ANNIVERSARY

  • I stopped caring about anniversaries when you stopped caring about cooking.
  • Today is our what?
  • Okay, let's celebrate, but do we have to celebrate together?
  • I thought we only celebrated important events?
  • You can celebrate anniversaries with your next husband.
  • You don't like what I pick out, so I thought why bother.
  • I got you a present worth a dollar for every time you were nice to me this year. Here's a $5 gift certificate for McDonald's.
  • If you want me to pretend like I care about our anniversary, I will.
  • You want to go out to dinner? Okay, okay, I'll take you to Pizza Hut if it'll shut ya up.
  • I thought you only had to celebrate anniversaries while you were still in love.
