A
Little About Gatesville Texas (Spur Capital of Texas!)
Present-day Coryell County began in 1849 with the establishment of Ft. Gates on the banks of the Leon River, about 5 miles from the current site of Gatesville. This U.S. Army fort, named after Major Collinson Reed Gates, was intended to protect settlers from intermittent Indian raids. Abandoned by the Army in 1852, the fort was later used during the War Between the States as a Confederate Army training site.
Coryell County was established in 1854 and Gatesville became the county seat a few months later. Incorporated in 1870, Gatesville grew slowly until the completion of the St. Louis & Southwestern Railroad spur in 1882 brought new people and new businesses, linking Gatesville to Waco and the rest of the country. Prosperity brought new homes, a fine new opera house (a frontier symbol of wealth and culture), and numerous civic improvements.

- Old Leon River Bridge - The route once known as the Old Georgetown Road was in existence by 1854 and crossed the Leon River here. A ferry operated at this crossing as early as 1854. The bowstring truss bridge erected nearby in 1882 was the first truss bridge in Coryell County. Damaged by two major floods in 1899 and 1900, the County Commissioners authorized the building of another bridge. The George E. King Bridge Company of Des Moines, Iowa built this structure in 1904. Features include steel construction, wood decking, original lattice, pin-connected members, and elaborate stone abutments. It is a 137-foot truss span with a 5-foot timber approach span, and is one of a few bridges surviving in Texas. The 1904 Bridge served as a major east-west artery for Central Texas. The road became part of State Highway 7 in 1917, and was renamed U.S. Highway 84 in the 1930's. The historic bridge was restored and rededicated in 1994.
- First Christian Church - Officially organized in 1892, the congregation built this structure and met here. The congregation disbanded in 1972. The building continued in use as a House of Worship for other groups for several years until it was deeded to the Coryell County Museum in 1990. The building exhibits well-crafted elements of the Greek Revival style in it's arched windows and steeply-pitched roof. The historical marker, along with the building, are located on Leon Street near downtown Gatesville.
- Coryell County Courthouse - An outstanding example of Second Empire Victorian style (often seen in Texas courthouse design), the current courthouse (the third) was erected in 1897 on land donated by early settler and Indian trader Richard C. Grant. tone of Texas' most distinctive and beautiful buildings. Limestone and red sandstone were precut to exact dimensions at the quarry and hauled to town by horse-drawn wagons. Each entrance boasts Roman Corinthian columns, and over the east entrance is a builder's mark of an owl. Several noted trials have been conducted in this building.
- Coryell Museum and Historical Center - The purpose of the Coryell Museum and Historical Center is to collect, preserve, document, exhibit, and interpret cultural materials related to the Coryell County region of Central Texas and the settlement and development of this gateway for pioneer immigration to the Texas Frontier. The Coryell Museum and Historical Center will provide a wide range of cultural, educational, and research opportunities relating to issues in the arts, sciences, and history for the people of the Coryell County area, the State of Texas, and all visitors.
- Last Drive-In Picture Show - No trip to Gatesville would be complete without a visit to the Last Drive-In Picture Show. Located at 2912 S. Highway 36 Bypass in Gatesville, the theatre is open 7 days a week.
