A Little About Alpine Texas
Ancient American hunters and gatherers roamed this area during prehistoric times. However, there were no permanent settlements until the arrival of the railroad in 1882. The first Spaniard known to have passed through this area was Captain Juan Dominquez de Mendoza, who in 1683-1684 led an expedition from La Junta, near present-day Presidio, to the Nueces River of Texas, seeking trade with the Indians and the conversion of souls to the Catholic faith. In 1839, Dr. Henry Connelly, an American trader in Chihuahua City, led a caravan of wagons through this area en route to St. Louis, Missouri to purchase goods for resale in northern Mexico.

Within a few years the present site of Alpine was a favorite camping spot of freighters on the Chihuahua Trail. There was abundant water, grass, and firewood at Burgess Springs, now Kokernot Springs. The final segment of the transcontinental Southern Pacific Railroad began in two directions in July 1881. One segment was built eastward from El Paso and reached Alpine in 1882. Another segment was built westward from San Antonio. Alpine came into existence in its present location in 1882 because of the abundant supply of high-quality water available from Burgess Springs, essential for the operation of steam locomotives. Then a town quickly sprang up around the railroad with cafes, rooming houses, saloons, grocery stores, and merchandise establishments on both sides of the railroad tracks. In March, 1887 the Texas Legislature approved a petition of Presidio County to create Brewster County with Murphyville as county seat. An election in January of 1888 changed the name to Alpine, an incorporated city. The primary economic enterprise from the late 1800's until recently has been ranching. Here a 10,000 acre ranch is considered small. The largest ranches often exceed 200,000 acres.

More About Alpine
Recreation is also a major attraction in Alpine, and the mild climate allows locals to enjoy golfing, hunting, and camping year-round. The varied landscape of mountains, desert, and the grassy hills of the Big Bend region attract folks out to play in all seasons. The surrounding environs are perfect for observing wildlife while partaking a scenic drive. And locals can always choose to stay in town and enjoy a rodeo, baseball game, or a pleasant afternoon in the park. For even more excitement, many hot-air balloons fly majestically over the City of Alpine during the Big Bend Balloon Bash over Labor Day Weekend. A brand new fifteen million dollar, state of the art medical center opened in September, 1999, and provides high-quality medical services to Alpine residents within minutes of the downtown area. The mild climate, breathtaking mountain setting, and some of the friendliest people all around combine to create a town of style and western charm. Combine these things with Alpine's amazing art scene, and it comes as no surprise that the town has earned its place among The 100 Best Small Towns in America! Come see for yourself what makes Alpine one of Texas' best places to call Home.

For visitors, there are over 400 motel rooms in Alpine, some of which are affiliated with national chains. There are also four full hook-up RV parks to choose from, and AMTRAK makes its only routine stop here, between Del Rio and El Paso. Greyhound services Alpine from Midland - Odessa and El Paso airports. Alpine's municipal airport caters to small private aircraft. "You folks need to check out Ivey's Emporium when you're in Alpine Texas!" -Says, Caddylak Maxy.
